Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a general term describing diseases causing intestinal inflammation. The two major forms of IBD are Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Both are chronic, affecting men and women approximately equally, and are most common in northern Europe and North America. Since many of the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are similar diagnosis is often difficult, time consuming, and invasive.1-2 Approximately 10-12% of cases are not initially classifiable and are referred to as “indeterminate colitis.” Over time, about half of these patients are eventually classified as CD or UC.3-5
